Classes limited to 12 students. Six weeks of daily classroom study with our distinguished faculty is complemented by the incomparable assets of New York City's cultural institutions and immigrant communities. Friday activities include trips to Arab neighborhoods to visit shops, restaurants, a mosque, a Maronite church, and various community organizations. Supplemental individual tutorials are available.

Courses are proficiency based and designed to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Level 1
Six weeks. Monday-Thursday, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.; Friday field trips and other special activities as arranged (no class July 4).

A first course Modern Standard Arabic introduces Arabic letters and sounds. Learn enough to engage in basic conversations and write short compositions about yourself, your family, and other familiar topics. Level 1 for true beginners and for heritage speakers who would like to learn Modern Standard Arabic. Texts: Alif-Baa (entire text) and Al-Kitaab, Part 1, lessons 1-8.

Level 2
Six weeks. Monday-Thursday, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.; Friday field trips and other special activities as arranged (no class July 4).

At Level 2 basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, are still emphasized, as well as cultural studies. Refine your knowledge of Arabic grammar and acquire the ability to narrate and describe places and people. Begin reading more complex Arabic texts on a variety of topics such as traveling, celebrations, and education. Text: Al-Kitaab, Part 1, lessons 8-20.
Prerequisite: Students wishing to register for Level 2 must pass a placement test administered during the week of May 21.

Level 3
Six weeks. Monday-Thursday, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.; Friday field trips and other special activities as arranged (no class July 4).

Students at the intermediate level read and discuss in Arabic a range of articles. Topics may include current political events as reported in the Arab world, feminist Arab writers, and Islamic social history. Successful completion of this course should prepare you for advanced studies in Arabic language and Arab societies. Text: Al-Kitaab, Part 2, and supplemental readings. Prerequisite: Students wishing to register for Level 3 must pass a placement test administered during the week of May 21.

Faculty:

Hani Alam, coordinator of Arabic, New School Department of Foreign Languages, has extensive experience teaching Arabic in New York and in the Middle East. Born and raised in Ramallah, Palestine, he has lived in Amman, Jordan, where he attended the University of Jordan. In addition to his work at the New School, Hani teaches at Hunter College-CUNY, offers private language tutorials, and works as a freelance translator.
